Carrier Drive Sidewalk

Expanding campus accessibility with a safe and efficient sidewalk connection design

Colman Engineering provided civil engineering and design services to support the future construction of a 6-foot-wide, 720-foot-long sidewalk along Carrier Drive, connecting bus stops 28 and 24 near the I-81 bridge.

The project began with a partial boundary and topographic survey to map existing street features, utilities, and grading requirements. With permission from VDOT, JMU was allowed to grade within the I-81 right-of-way, eliminating the need for a retaining wall and enabling a more cost-effective and streamlined design.

Colman Engineering developed Maintenance of Traffic, Erosion and Sediment Control, and Drainage Plans while also accommodating several design iterations to meet JMU’s preferences. The team emphasized value engineering throughout the project, ensuring a balance of functionality, quality, and cost efficiency.
