EMU Outdoor Track Redevelopment and Expansion

Redeveloping EMU’s outdoor track and enhancing stormwater management

Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) sought to expand and redevelop its outdoor track while addressing stormwater management needs in the Parkwoods area. This project would modernize athletic facilities while improving environmental sustainability.

Colman Engineering partnered with EMU and CHA to deliver a civil site design plan approved by the City of Harrisonburg. Phase 1 focused on the track’s redevelopment, beginning with a detailed site survey and conceptual design. Preliminary and final plans refined the layout, incorporating utilities, grading, lighting, and stormwater BMPs to ensure compliance with city requirements and readiness for construction.

Phase 2 addressed the Parkwoods stormwater management plan, including remediation of the detention pond and strategies to mitigate stream channel erosion and sediment runoff. Post-approval services included preparing permitting documents, SWPPP, and BMP certifications, as well as providing construction administration support.

The completed project positions EMU to meet its athletic goals while advancing its environmental stewardship.
