Harrisonburg Mennonite Church Expansion

Helping community-focused church be an even better neighbor
As part of a building expansion project, Harrisonburg Mennonite Church (HMC) needed to add an access road along a steep, narrow side of the property. But they also wanted to address downstream flooding from the site, since it was already affecting neighboring homes.
Colman Engineering designed a drive that would minimize cuts and maximize fills while maintaining the required grades and slopes.
To address water quality/quantity and minimize the impact on downstream properties, the team designed two large bioretentions to capture runoff from the building and the new drive.
With its new BMPs, the church is able to route its runoff around adjacent residential properties, while also reducing the overall peak runoffs from the site. This solution added to the beauty of their outdoor landscape, while helping them be better neighbors.
