Hartman Hall Fire Pit

Designing a welcoming campus gathering space

Colman Engineering provided civil engineering services for the JMU fire pit located between Hartman Hall and Newman Lake, a space designed to foster community and connection. As a Division of Engineering and Buildings (DEB) project, the design required careful coordination to meet state requirements while maintaining the project’s vision.

The project included a localized site survey to map existing conditions and utilities, the design of the fire pit layout with gas and electric service lines, and grading and drainage plans for the fire pit area and access path. Although the fire pit appeared to be a simple project, it became more complex due to DEB requirements. The team worked closely with LDDBlueline and the mechanical contractor to ensure compliance while maintaining constructability.

Colman’s work helped ensure that the fire pit site was both functional and inviting, creating a welcoming space for students and staff to gather.
