Hockey Field Modular Building Project

Delivering site design and construction support for new modular building on East Campus

Colman Engineering provided civil engineering services for JMU’s new modular building, located adjacent to the field hockey field on East Campus. As a Division of Engineering and Buildings (DEB) project, this effort required careful planning and stakeholder collaboration to meet both state and university standards.

The project began with a detailed pre-design investigation, including a topographic site survey and utility mapping, to create a comprehensive basemap for planning. Colman Engineering also coordinated and provided a geotechnical analysis of the soils, as the area had been backfilled, ensuring the site was prepared for development.

Building on this foundation, the team developed conceptual and preliminary site layouts, addressing grading, drainage, erosion control, utility tie-ins—including a pumped sewer system—lighting, and demolition plans. Accessibility was a key challenge, and the design focused on creating a functional and inclusive site for all users. Final construction documents were prepared to meet JMU and DEB standards.

These efforts support JMU’s campus expansion while minimizing site disturbance and ensuring functionality for future use.
