Jamestown Settlement - James Fort Site Plan and Drainage

Restoring historic landmarks while solving stormwater challenges to preserve Virginia's story
The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation was looking to address stormwater drainage problems at the Jamestown fort and investigate the potential of expanding the fort site to approximate its original size and orientation.
Colman Engineering met with the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation representatives to discuss their challenges and goals for the project. Colman Engineering then developed a conceptual plan of a new palisade design and fort layout, which included a new grading and stormwater management plan that minimizes below-grade storm structures in the fort and addresses flooding and erosion issues.
The stormwater management plan also incorporates a moat as a stormwater appurtenance, with historical consideration for the width, depth, and cross-section of the moat.
With its expanded and restored site, the Jamestown Settlement will be able to continue telling the story of 17th century Virginia and bringing history to life.
