JMU Health Center

Enhancing access and safety for JMU’s Health Center
To improve accessibility and emergency response capabilities, Colman Engineering provided civil engineering services for the widening of the existing entrance to James Madison University’s Health Center at the intersection of Mason Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
The project included a minor field site survey to assess existing structures, utilities, and stormwater infrastructure, ensuring accurate data for design decisions. The entrance was redesigned to meet fire department access requirements while minimizing impacts on adjacent storm structures along Mason Street.
Colman Engineering conducted a drainage study to evaluate the capacity of affected storm structures and implemented necessary modifications to maintain effective stormwater management. Close coordination with the local Fire Department and JMU stakeholders helped ensure the redesigned entrance met safety, permitting, and functionality standards for seamless integration into the university’s infrastructure.
